Great Lakes Roadtrip Mystery Knit-Along
Really Clear Designs has a new addition to their Great Lakes Roadtrip series and we are joining in the fun of the Mystery Knit-Along! Here is a description from the designers:
The 2023 Road Trip Mystery is a cross between a crescent and a half circle in shape, similar to our Pennsylvania Road Trip shawl from 2020. It will be worked in 9 main sections, referred to as Legs. For each leg, knitters will be presented with two design options to choose from, one by Cynthia, and the other by Valerie. The two designs for each leg are interchangeable, so knitters can choose either one. There are two different size options for this shawl, misses and plus size. Individuals who wear small to XL should knit the mises size, while those who wear XL and up or those who prefer a generous shawl may choose to make the plus size.
This pattern starts with a provisional cast-on and uses a variety of stitch patterns and knitting techniques including fair isle, intarsia, beads, charts, and more |
Knitty Gritty will be hosting a Cast On Party and additional social gatherings to correspond with each leg release. Please note that, due to an unfortunate circumstance at their partner yarn supplier, Really Clear Designs may be delayed in the release of this pattern, so it may not coincide exactly with LYS Day, but we will have color bundles and suggestions available. Be sure to add your name to the sign up list, so we can let you know our party dates!
The “Packing List”
Needles: U.S. 5 (3.75 mm) or size needed for gauge (see “Check your Engine” section of the pattern), 28-36” circular needles, 40” or greater circular needles and double pointed needles
Notions: Size C (2.75 mm), D (3.25 mm), or E (3.5 mm) crochet hook, Steel crochet hook 1.25 mm or smaller if beading, plenty of stitch markers in assorted colors, including locking stitch markers, tapestry needle
Yarn Requirements: The Great Lakes Road Trip shawl is worked with three different colors of fingering weight yarn (about 445 yards per skein):
• Main Color – Solid or tonal(you’ll need 2 skeins of this for misses, and 3 for plus)
• Contrast Color A – Variegated, solid or tonal
• Contrast Color B – Solid or tonal
Total yardage will vary based on the design choices made at each leg and whether the misses or plus version is being made. It is important that the main color be a solid or tonal yarn so that the designs come through.
Bead Requirements: Beads are completely optional for this project, but we do love our bling, so there are bead options included in just about every leg of the pattern. They recommend size 5 or 6 beads and quantities and colors are dependent on your design and yarn choices. If you get a total of 700 for the misses size or 900 for the plus size, you’ll have more than enough beads. You may get all the same bead color, or you can play with mixing different colors. Really Clear’s designs are flexible enough that either way will work! Most of the beads (about 65-70%) will be used with the main yarn color with the rest of the beads split between the two contrast colors.
