Are you - and your eyes! - tired of wading through seas of text in order to knit those luscious gansey, lace, cable and colorwork patterns?  Do you have to regretfully take a pass on a pattern that the designer indicates is "only charted" and not written out?  Join us for Chart Reading class - nothing mystical about it except for learning how to demystify charts and speed up your knitting!  We will be knitting several swatches over two sessions with each swatch focusing on a different type of fabric characteristic including gansey, lace, cables, stranded/Fair Isle, and mosaic.  We look forward to charting new seas with you ;-)

Time: 2 two-hour classes
Level 3: Look, I made some stuff! I can knit and purl, knit in the round, increase and decrease, and I’m ready to try something new.
Skills you need: Cast on, knit and purl in the round, bind off.
Skills you will learn: 

• Reading charts

Materials:

• light-colored worsted weight yarn, approximately 100 yards
• high contrasting color of worsted weight yarn, approximately 50 yards (for Session 2)
• US7 (4.5 mm) needles (go up one size if you are a tight knitter, down one size if a loose knitter)
• cable needle
• stitch markers, approximately 2 dozen

Suggested Yarns: 

• Blue Sky Fibers Woolstok
• Berroco Ultra Wool
• Berroco Vintage

For the best experience, we recommend that you do not use fully synthetic or cotton yarn, or dark colors. As a reminder, yarn for classes must come from KGY. Visit our class policy page for more information.
Preparation: 
Using your light-colored worsted weight yarn, set up three swatches as follows:

1. Cast on 24 stitches, K three rows, P one row (wrong side), ready to work a right-side row.
2. Cast on 29 stitches, K three rows, P one row (wrong side), ready to work a right-side row.
3. Cast on 43 stitches, K three rows, P one row (wrong side), ready to work a right-side row.

Swatches 2 and 3 may be placed on holders or waste yarn; we will be working Swatch 1 first.
